Thailand monks get busted for forgetting their vows and living large
If your life’s work is to set an example of living with simplicity, free of material belongings, it’s probably best not to show up on YouTube flying in a private jet and wearing expensive aviator sunglasses, a luxury brand travel bag and modern wireless headphones. After a video much like this of monks from a monastery in northeast Thailand appeared online recently and went viral, Thailand’s national Buddhism body says it will be monitoring its monks for inappropriate behavior. Monks are not supposed to own any objects at all and must practice self-restraint. Last year, about 300 out of 61,416 monks were reprimanded for behaviors outside of what is allowed in their ascetic lifestyles, such as drinking alcohol and having sex.
